Abstract

Anhydrous MgCl.sub.2 is prepared by a) dissolving magnesite in a starting melt of MgCl.sub.2 --CeCl.sub.3 forming MgCl.sub.2 +CeOCl+CO.sub.2.uparw., b) and converting the CeOCl back to CeCl.sub.3 by chlorination with Cl.sub.2 in the presence of a reducing agent such as CO.sub.2 or H.sub.2 to yield a second melt of MgCl.sub.2 --CeCl.sub.3 having a higher concentration of MgCl.sub.2. Steps a) and b) are repeated with the second melt to further increase the concentration of MgCl.sub.2. The concentrated MgCl.sub.2 --CeCl.sub.3 melt is then reacted with MgO and Cl.sub.2 in the absence of a reducing agent to convert the soluble CeCl.sub.3 into insoluble CeO.sub.2 precipitate which can be separated to yield pure MgCl.sub.2.
