Thiazole esters are suitable for detecting the presence of leukocytes in urine. Such thiazole esters are suitable for use in compositions, diagnostic devices, and methods for detecting the presence of leukocytes. For example, R.sub.1 may be thienyl, pyridyl, furyl, styryl, pyrrolyl, or indolyl. In still another embodiment, the thiazole ester includes unsubstituted or substituted fused hydrocarbyl rings as a substituent. In one embodiment, fused hydrocarbyl rings include naphthyl.
