Abstract
The present invention includes lithium manganese oxide spinel compounds having a low porosity, a high tap density and a high pellet density, and methods of preparing these compounds. In particular, the method comprises preparing a lithium manganese oxide with a spinel structure and having the formula: wherein: Li.sub.1+X Mn.sub.2-Y M.sub.m.sub..sub.1 .sup.1 M.sub.m.sub..sub.2 .sup.2 . . . M.sub.m.sub..sub.k .sup.k O.sub.4+Z M.sup.1, M.sup.2, . . . M.sup.k are cations different than lithium or manganese selected from the group consisting of alkaline earth metals, transition metals, B, Al, Si, Ga and Ge; X, Y, m.sub.1, m.sub.2, . . . , m.sub.k, each have a value between 0 and 0.2; Z has a value between -0.1 and 0.2; and X, Y, m.sub.1, m.sub.2, . . . m.sub.k are selected to satisfy the equation: Y=X+m.sub.1 +m.sub.2 + . . . +m.sub.k.
