Abstract
A positive active material for a rechargeable lithium battery is provided. The active material includes a manganese-based compound selected from the group consisting of the compounds represented by the formulas 1 to 6. The surface of the active material is coated with metal oxide. Li.sub.x Mn.sub.1-x M'.sub.x A.sub.2 (1) Li.sub.x Mn.sub.1-x M'.sub.x O.sub.2-z A.sub.z (2) Li.sub.x Mn.sub.1-x-y M'.sub.x M'.sub.y A.sub.2 (3) Li.sub.x Mn.sub.2-x M'.sub.x O.sub.4 (4) Li.sub.x Mn.sub.2-x M'.sub.x O.sub.4-z A.sub.z (5) Li.sub.x Mn.sub.2-x-y M'.sub.x M'.sub.y A.sub.4 (6) (where, 0.01.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.0.1, 0.01.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.0.1, 0.01.ltoreq.z.ltoreq.0.5, M' is at least one semi-metal selected from Si, B, Ti, Ga, Ge or Al, M' is at least one transition metal or lanthanide metal selected from Al, Cr, Co, Mg, La, Ce, Sr or V, and A is selected from O, F, S or P.)
