Abstract
Alkanoyl L-carnitines of the formula: ##STR1## where R is hydrogen or a C.sub.2-8 alkanoyl group and X.sup.- is an anion of a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, are used in conjunction with anticancer agents such as taxol or bleomycin to improve the therapeutic index and reduce side effects typical of anticancer chemotherapy.
