Abstract

The present invention provides a compound of formula (I) wherein a, b, c, d, and e, are R.sup.7, OR.sup.7, SR.sup.7, NR.sup.7 R.sup.8, NHCOR.sup.7, CO.sub.2 R.sup.7, CN, NO.sub.2, NH.sub.2, N.sub.3, or a halogen. R.sup.7 and R.sup.8 are H or alkyl, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are H or alkyl, and R.sup.3 is a non-aromatic substituent. Substituent A is OH, NH.sub.2, or SH. Substituents B and B.sup.1 include amide and sulfonamide groups, which can be cyclic, acyclic, or amino acid derivatives. Alternatively, B and R' together with the nitrogen to which they are bonded, and/or B' and R.sup.2 together with the nitrogen to which they are bonded, define a heterocycle. The present invention further provides a pharmaceutical composition that includes a carrier and a therapeutically effective amount of at least one compound of the present invention. The present invention further provides therapeutic methods that include administering a therapeutically effective amount of at least one compound of the present invention ##STR1##
