Applying and utilizing a catalyst in a coating layer to enhance release of accumulated buildup on a surface. The catalyst is in the form of micro or nano-sized particles that are optionally mixed with a binder material and applied as a coating of at least a portion of a surface, such as an electrosurgical tip. The particles are located on the outer surface of the coating layer to be in direct contact with any buildup, such as eschar, that may have accumulated. An energy source, such as a heat source, a light source, a microwave source, or the like, is used to activate the catalyst in order to aid in the release of the accumulated eschar. The activated catalytic particles interact with the eschar constituents to break bonds that have occurred between the eschar and the surface of the electrode or tip, allowing the eschar to release from the tip.
