Abstract

A storage container for hazardous material, especially heat-generating hazardous material, comprises a central elongate, generally cylindrical concrete body having an elongate, sealable interior cavity for accommodating the hazardous material and a cooling liquid in which the hazardous material is immersed. The cavity comprises a generally cylindrical storage section concentric with the concrete body and an expansion chamber in fluid communication with the storage section. The expansion chamber is located axially outside on end of the storage section and extends radially past the circumference of the storage section. It is dimensioned such that when the cavity is filled with a predetermined quantity of the cooling liquid, the cooling liquid completely fills the storage section while still leaving room for expansion of the cooling liquid in the expansion chamber.
