Abstract
A method for NO.sub.x and/or SO.sub.x regeneration of an NO.sub.x -storage catalytic converter arranged in an exhaust treatment system of an internal combustion engine having more than one cylinder. A mass flux of reducing agents are increased in the exhaust treatment system. A control unit operates the more than one cylinder of the internal combustion engine so that the cylinders are selectively detuned. The control unit can operate a first part of the cylinders under a lean condition where .lambda.>1 and the control unit can operate a second set of the cylinders under a rich condition where .lambda.<1.
