A process is provided for the production of acetone from formaldehyde and methyl chloride. In the process formaldehyde is reacted in the vapor phase with methyl chloride to produce acetone and hydrogen chloride. Acetaldehyde may be formed as an intermediate in the reaction. The byproduct hydrogen chloride may be recovered from the process to produce additional methyl chloride from methyl alcohol.
