Abstract

An article comprising an electrically conductive body part, for example comprising copper or silver, and a coating comprising a refractory metal, preferably tantalum. At least a portion of the refractory metal layer has been converted to an electrically conductive ceramic material, preferably tantalum boride. The refractory metal layer improves the corrosion resistance properties of the article, and the ceramic material prevents oxidation of the refractory metal layer, thereby preventing passivation of the article while conducting electrical current. The article is suitable for use as an electrode in a corrosive environment. The article is cost effective because passivation can be avoided without applying a noble metal layer. There is also a method of forming the article wherein the ceramic material is preferably provided by applying a boride in the gas or solid phase and heating the article.
