The present invention relates to the modification of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) with aryl-/Alkyl Succinic Anhydride (ASA) to yield aryl-/alkyl succinic anhydride HA derivatives (ASA-HA), to such derivatives, and to their applications and uses, in particular in the cosmetic and biomedical industries. The ASA-HA derivatives are expected to have interesting properties which can be used in advanced formulations (binding to the skin more strongly than unmodified HA), possibly also in delivery systems for active agents or drugs by encapsulation (nano/micro capsules) or formation of nano/micro spheres. Furthermore, low molecular weight ASA-HA derivatives are expected to penetrate the skin more efficiently than unmodified HA of the same molecular weight.
