Abstract
The present invention provides a viscosity regulator for aqueous resin and an aqueous coating composition containing the viscosity regulator, which can reduce the use amount of alkali for neutralization in the viscosity regulator, has excellent viscosity imparting effect, pseudoplasticity imparting effect and thermal stability, and can exert the effects at pH values in a wide range from acidic to alkaline. A viscosity modifier for aqueous resins, which comprises a viscosity imparting component (X) comprising 1 to 30 mass% of a diamide compound (A) obtained by reacting a diamine component (A1) selected from the group consisting of diamines having 2 to 12 carbon atoms with a monocarboxylic acid component (A2) selected from the group consisting of monocarboxylic acids having at least a hydroxyl group, and/or hydrogenated castor oil (A'), and 5 to 99 mass% of a first solvent (C) having at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl groups, ether groups, ester groups, amide groups and ketone groups.
