Abstract
A method and an apparatus are described for producing a fibre strand in the tobacco processing industry, especially a tobacco strand for the production of cigarettes or other smokable articles. In order to form the fibre strand (11), a fibrous material is poured onto the strand conveyor (1). The fibre strand (11) is conveyed in the direction of its lengthwise axis, the strand density being measured in spaced sections transversely adjoining the strand conveying direction (2). Excess fibres are removed from the fibre strand by a removal means (12). Starting from a predetermined reference plane (1), the density measurements obtained in consecutive spaced sections are totalled until the predetermined strand height plane is reached. A filling power signal corresponding to the filling power of the fibre material is generated from the sum of these density measurements and is processed in a control arrangement (22) to give a target value signal of the strand density which maintains the hardness of the strand constant. This target value signal is used as a basis for controlling the removal means (12) to ensure compliance with predetermined strand hardness values.
