An activated lime for use in removing acid gases from a combustion gas stream is produced by thermally decomposing calcium hydroxide to calcium oxide through contact of the calcium hydroxide with a heated gas stream at a temperature of between 750-950°F for a time sufficient to produce a calcium oxide having a specific surface area of between 30-48 square meters per gram, and collecting the product so produced.
