The present invention relates to an apparatus for treating a workpiece, in particular a substantially flat substrate, comprising a table (2) for supporting the workpiece (5), wherein a flow generating device (6, 11) in a region between the workpiece (5) and the top of the table (2) generates a gas flow (22) on which the workpiece (5) is stored during the treatment. The workpiece (5) is movable by means of a feed device in a longitudinal direction. The device comprises laser units (3, 9) mounted on moving devices for machining the workpiece (5), in particular for removing material from the surfaces thereof. A detector for markings attached to the workpiece (5) is used as a position control measuring device.
