Abstract
Kinetic energy recovery system (e.g. KERS / KHERS) for a vehicle having swashplate compressor 110 comprising pistons 115 and cylinders 118 aligned with compressor axis, and air outlet 118b for outputting compressed air. Swashplate 112 can tilt relative to compressor axis between no-compression and maximum compression positions in which pistons 115 move between top dead centre and bottom dead centre, swashplate 112 coupled to, aligned with, and rotating in tandem with a shaft of the vehicle. First air tank 130a receives compressed air, from which motor 140 extracts mechanical work / energy. Heat exchanger 132 may heat compressed air using heat energy recovery circuit 200 including closed loop ducting for transferring exhaust gas heat. An intermediate compression position may be used. The no-compression position may locate pistons 115 at top dead centre. Swashplate 112 may be mounted to rotate with / tilt relative to base 120, via linear actuators 122. Swashplate 112 may have anular track around which pistons 115 or cylinders 118 travel. A second air tank 130b may be included.
