Abstract
A process for preparing a stable dispersion in an aqueous medium of particles of polymer, said process comprising the steps of: (a) reacting at least one radically polymerizable monomer in an organic liquid in the presence of a dispersion stabilizer for the particles to form particles of polymer insoluble in said organic liquid and water, said stabilizer being a resin having in each of its molecules on the average at least 0.3 unit of a polymerizable double bond and a functional group that can be neutralized with an acid or a base, said resin being capable of being emulsifiably dispersed or dissolved in an aqueous medium by neutralization; (b) neutralizing with acids or bases the functional group of the resin as a dispersion stabilizer; and (c) replacing the organic liquid of the resulting dispersion of polymer particles with an aqueous medium.
