Abstract

A dye-donor element for thermal dye transfer comprises a support having thereon a dye dispersed in a polymeric binder, the dye comprising a magenta pyrazolylazoaniline dye having the formula: ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each independently represents hydrogen, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having from 1 to about 6 carbon atoms or an allyl group, with the proviso that R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 may not both be hydrogen at the same time; or R.sup.1 may be joined together with X to complete a 5- to 6-membered heterocyclic ring; X represents hydrogen, R.sup.5, or OR.sup.5, or can be joined together with R.sup.1 as described above; Y represents hydrogen, R.sup.6, OR.sup.6, halogen, or NHJR.sup.6 ; J represents --CO--, --CO.sub.2 --, --SO.sub.2 --, or --CONR.sup.4 --; R.sup.3 represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or allyl group as described above for R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 ; or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl or hetaryl group of from 5 to about 10 atoms; each R.sup.4 independently represents hydrogen or R.sup.3 ; R.sup.5 represents alkyl, allyl, aryl or hetaryl as described above for R.sup.3 ; and R.sup.6 represents alkyl, allyl, aryl or hetaryl as described above for R.sup.3 ; with the proviso that one of R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 or R.sup.6 is an alkyl group of 1 to about 6 carbon atoms substituted with a group capable of intermolecular hydrogen bonding.
