Abstract
A roadway guardrail system 50 comprises a support post 200, where the support post 200 comprises a first end disposed at an upper portion of the support post 200, a second end disposed at a lower portion of the support post 200 and a longitudinal axis extending between the first end and the second end, and a rail 100 having a mounting aperture, where the rail 100 is operatively coupled to the support post 200, a fastener 320 coupled to the rail 100, and a reinforcing member 310 located between the rail 100 and the support post 200. The rail 100, the fastener 320 and the reinforcing member 310 are configured to, in response to a collision with the rail 100, move in an upward direction relative to the support post 200 to dissipate energy from the collision. After a predetermined upper movement the support post 200 inhibits the upper movement of the rail 100, the fastener 320, and the reinforcing member 310 to further dissipate energy from the collision.
