Abstract

A method of charging explosives in a substantially vertical blast borehole (50) with a reduced loading density is disclosed. The method includes the steps of: (i) Introducing a charging hose (54) in fluid connection with a nozzle (10) into an opening of the vertical blast borehole (50). (ii) Moving the charging hose (54) and nozzle (10) along a travel direction (59) in the blast borehole (50) at a controlled rate. (iii) Forcing an explosive emulsion though the nozzle (10) at a controlled pumping rate so that the emulsion is sprayed laterally onto only an inner wall (52) of the blast hole (50) in an arc formation. The arc extends around a nozzle axis that is parallel to the travel direction (59). (iv) Adjusting the pumping rate and controlled moving rate to form a coherent string (30) of the explosive emulsion exiting from the nozzle (10) so that the string (30) only partially fills up the blast borehole diameter.
