A novel organic compound that absorbs ultraviolet to infrared range rays, excelling in light resistance and solubility in solvents, and that also has thermal properties adapted to uses in which the compound finds application; and use thereof. There is provided an indolenine compound having a bisindolenine skeleton composed of two indolenine rings bonded together via the 3-position carbon atom of each of the indolenine rings by means of a divalent linkage group, and provided a relevant methine dye. Further, there is provided an optical recording medium comprising the methine dye.
