Abstract

Absorbant articles, tissues, and soft wipes are made from a wet-laid sheet containing cellulosic fibers and cellulose ester staple fibers present in an amount sufficient to provide the wet laid-sheet with a lower density, or higher thickness, higher water absorbance, or higher softness, at a given basis weight compared to a 100 wt.% cellulose composition. The cellulose ester staple fibers can also provide the wet laid-sheet with a higher softness, while maintaining or increasing tear strength. The products and articles made from such wet laid sheets can also have higher water absorbency and either tensile strength or burst strength or both. The wet laid sheets and articles made from these sheets can now be made with a synthetic fiber in the wet laid operation since cellulose ester can be subjected to a refining operation.
