Description

Assist with intellectual property matters, including reviewing initial invention disclosures for patentability; work with product development groups to identify inventions and review patent applications. Work with attorneys to perform patent analysis, infringement study, patent portfolio management, novelty searches, market/technology evaluation, and litigation support.

•Manage and oversee DTL’s patent portfolio and coordinate with outside counsel to insure that the prosecution of the patent applications is aligned with DTL’s intellectual property strategies.
•Evaluate the patentability of new inventions and assigning patent preparation and prosecution matters to a group of outside counsel, and supervise their work product to assure it meets Samsung’s standards of quality, timeliness and cost.
•Work with business units, patent engineers and outside counsel to develop intellectual property (IP) strategies for the protection and commercial exploitation of intellectual property.
•Work with patent review board to insure that intellectual property is protected in a manner that is consistent with the intellectual property strategies.
•Participate in reviews of the patent portfolio with business and engineering personnel to identify patents that could be exploited.
•Coordinate reviews of the existing patent portfolio with engineers, patent review boards, business and engineering personnel to enable cost savings by abandoning patents that no longer support the intellectual property strategies.
•Conduct patentability/infringement studies and prepare legal opinions and analysis of patents.

•Must have excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills and presentation skills.
•Requires the ability to manage, plan, organize, and prioritizes multiple assignments and projects as directed.
•Demonstrated ability to interact at the most senior levels within the STA and customer organizations. The ability to negotiate with and convince others in adversarial environments, including defense attorneys, customer leadership, VP’s, directors & managers, staff, and employees with opposing views and interests to accept and approve negotiations, plans, proposals, and recommendations.
•Ability to make professional legal and business presentations in writing, through emails and reports, or orally, including complex legal, business, and technical matters to an audience of high technical skills, management, and operational experience.
•Ability to direct outside retained counsel members to achieve contracted objectives and team goals and to achieve results within established time frames and requirements.

 

The position requires the ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities in the following environment:
•Work is generally performed in an office environment.
•Operate a computer keyboard and view a video display terminal 80% of work time, including prolonged periods of time.
•The movement and transportation of equipment, most of the time under 25 pounds.
•Performs work under time schedules and stresses which are normally periodic or cyclical, including time sensitive requests, over-time, intellectual challenge, constant technical data feedback, and language barriers.
•Machines, tools, equipment, and work aids representative and commonly associated with PC’s, printers, and office work areas.
•Frequently works additional hours beyond normal schedule.
•Travel to customers or STA sites, on an exception basis.
•Under very little direct supervision with a high level of responsibility to apply general policies and guidelines where decisions are seldom monitored and consequences of decisions adversely affect operating results and management decisions. Complete access to confidential company data where disclosure may jeopardize the company’s competitive position.

Requirments

  To qualify for this position, the following minimal background and skill levels are required:
•A Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science from a four-year college or university.
•A Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited college or university.
•A State Bar License required.
•A minimum of 5-7 years experience in a related capacity.
•Registered USPTO license required
•Must be able to write, read, analyze, interpret, present, and explain legal defense strategies and documents.
•Must have previous experience in writing and reviewing invention disclosures.
