Abstract
Deviation in phase difference of the light passing each of the red, green, and blue dots, i.e., 2.pi.*(.alpha.*d.sub.R *.DELTA.n.sub.R +Re.sub.R)/.lambda..sub.R, 2.pi.*(.alpha.*d.sub.G *.DELTA.n.sub.G +Re.sub.G)/.lambda..sub.G, and 2.pi.*(.alpha.*d.sub.B *.DELTA.n.sub.B +Re.sub.B)/.lambda..sub.B, are matched when thickness of a liquid crystal layer 7 at red, green, and blue dots are d.sub.R, d.sub.G, and d.sub.B ; wavelength of a visible light passing each dot is .lambda..sub.R, .lambda..sub.R, and .lambda..sub.B ; refractive index anisotropy of the liquid crystal layer 7 in the visible light wavelengths .lambda..sub.R, .lambda..sub.R, and .lambda..sub.B is .DELTA.n.sub.R, .DELTA.n .sub.G, and .DELTA.n.sub.B ; and retardations of a retardation plate are Re.sub.R, Re.sub.G, and Re.sub.B. This enables the achievement of a reflective color LCD with high achromatic color during white display and high contrast display.
